Who are they?

Unimed has been operating since 1979 and specialises in individual and workplace health insurance.

They are a New Zealand owned and operated mutual society with no overseas shareholders and are one of the top four group health insurance companies in New Zealand providing employer schemes for a significant proportion of New Zealand's largest businesses.

What do they offer?

Unimed offers a range of health insurance packages ranging from economy plans to extensive cover.

They specialise in employer group voluntary schemes for businesses.

Their plans include Health Positive - an entry level package suitable for under 35's, Unicare Plus - an ideal plan for employer group voluntary schemes and medium sized company subsidised schemes, Major Surgical, Medicalcare - suitable for groups as a base plan for subsidised staff cover and Hospital Select - the most extensive cover available and ideal for subsidised executive plans.

Their entry level plans start at less than 5 dollars a week for basic cover for individuals, whilst the packages offering higher cover are priced depending on the needs of the business or individual.

How are they rated?

Unimed are a popular choice for medical cover for both employer groups and individuals due to their relatively low premiums and the fact that they offer cover for pre-existing conditions.

They have an 'A' financial rating from A M Best and reports from 2013 show that they "paid out 88 cents of claims for every dollar of premium received".
